Roy Wood - PPC 2010

Having worked in secondary schools for over 30 years, and been a governor for most of them, Roy has a great interest in education. As a society he believes that we need to be more effective at educating the whole child - with less emphasis on tests and a greater opportunity for young people to develop their own interests and skills.

Roy also believes that we need to provide more opportunity for teenagers to use their energies constructively outside school, with better facilities and the chance to learn how to develop into caring citizens.

However well we educate young people Roy believes that it will be largely wasted if we hand on to them a seriously degraded world. If climate change is not slowed - with all the problems that will bring in terms of food, water, land and security - the problems we face today will seem trivial in fifty years.

To Roy, politics must not only be about the issues of immediate concern but must be about our long-term vision for a better world. We need truly sustainable development, to achieve which we must be active members of a strong European Union and must work to make the UN more effective.

Roy's personal drive is to help to create a more just and sustainable society for his young grandchildren to grow to adulthood in.
