Prescription Charges Exemptions

Fri, 26th May 2017

I have been asked if I will commit to supporting a review of the medical exemptions for prescription charges in England.

I am aware that, apart from the usual exemptions relating to age, pregnancy, income and other factors, there are exemptions for people who hold a valid medical exemption certificate

This list of exemptions has barely changed since 1968 and does not include most long term conditions prevalent today.

Liberal Democrats recognise that for people with long term conditions and disabilities prescription charges can become a major cost, discouraging some from getting the medicine they need.

This has a major impact on the lives of many people in Crewe and Nantwich when they are most in need of support.

Liberal Democrats will always fight to protect our health and care system, and to ensure it can carry on delivering for future generations.

This is why we have committed in our manifesto to reviewing the current rules for exemption from prescription charges to ensure they are fair to those with long-term conditions and disabilities.

And I am happy to register my support for this review.
